Background: Leyba played for the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program that won the junior division championship in 2011 in Minneapolis before signing with the Tigers for $400,000 the next year. He was teammates there with Gustavo Cabrera, and both players signed out of the same trainer’s program (Christian Batistia, who is known as “Niche”) on July 2. While Cabrera’s tools and athleticism helped him earn a $1.3 million bonus from the Giants, Leyba outperformed him in the Dominican Summer League in his pro debut in 2013 and is the better prospect.
