Mario Martinez from Santiago DR, born on July 31, 1996, stands 6’0″ 180lb. Mario played in the DPL Santiago circuit for much of the season and was a DPL All-Star in 2012. Martinez is a hard worker and a fundamentally sound player that loves to play the game.
Mario has good defensive skills and slightly below average arm strength that should improve with development. He’s a mature 17 year old with the aptitude to guide a game behind the dish and a good feel for the position. His bat is his best tool; Martinez has bat speed and a compact swing; he has a good approach and his hands are usually inside. He can drive the ball gap to gap with raw power and makes frequent solid contact.
LA Angels DR supervisor Roman Ocumarez was most aggressive in acquiring Martinez. Roman identified Mario early last year in Santiago and continued to follow the young catchers’ progression during the DPL season. Martinez had several clubs with interest during the year but hadn’t reached an agreement prior to the DPL POWER SHOWCASE tournament. Ocumarez took the opportunity given and invited Martinez to the LAA facility for a workout including Angels executives visiting their academy in San Pedro de Macoris. It was apparent Mario impressed the organization as they agreed to terms for $70,000.00. The contract is pending MLB approval.
Congratulations to the LA Angels, Roman Ocumarez and the Martinez family!
